Event contents

Osaka World Exposition (international exposition in Japan) is memorized as national festival held in rapid economic growth 1970 (Showa 45) right in the middle. On the other hand, Osaka World Exposition was test site of design work that assumed city of the future.

It was about September, 1965 (Showa 40) in the next year of the Tokyo Olympics that holding of Osaka World Exposition was decided formally. Thereafter, we concentrated wisdom of Japanese various fields, and preparations were pushed forward for decision of theme, development of basic design, holding four and a half years later including establishment of emblem rapidly.

It was about March, 1967 (Showa 42) that it was decided that we assumed venue Chisato hill, and creation construction began. During session, we assumed that 500,000-600,000 audiences flocked on holiday, and venue was designed as model of city in near future. It was basic design of producer chief Kenzo Tange that chose internal and external pavilion to flower to branch in travolator to tree trunk in symbol zone where we collected festival open space where various events were developed day after day, theme building (solar tower), theater, art museums.

International exposition was event to show "thing" once. However, after World War II, we greatly changed the character from "international exposition to show" to "international exposition to think" about. Theme that Osaka World Exposition adopted was claim that "progress and harmony of the human" said to pay more attention to various negative sides that scientific technological change brought progress of the human without praising. "Festival open space" was envisioned in order to express this idea, and << solar tower >> by Taro Okamoto was made by the center, and theme display was developed.

Osaka World Exposition was test site which considered the possibility of design. Designer was mobilized from preliminary stage, and production of promotion material including emblem and poster and illustration participated in signature plan in venue or display design of pavilion more and showed possibility of professional ability called designer in various forms.

64,210,000 people arrived during 6-month session, and Osaka World Exposition settled big success. At this exhibition, we look back on design work that led Osaka World Exposition to success and think about what international exposition was for designer.
